New Era Begins: President Mahama Reconstitutes Boards and Corporations
In accordance with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), a new chapter has begun in Ghana's governance as all members of statutory boards, corporations, commissions, and councils appointed by the former President or a former Minister of State have ceased to hold office ¹.
As of January 7, 2025, these members have formally relinquished their positions, paving the way for the assumption of office by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama. This transition marks a significant milestone in Ghana's democratic process, ensuring a smooth handover of power and continuity of governance.
Key Provisions of the Presidential (Transition) Act
The Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012, outlines the framework for the transfer of power from one democratically elected President to another. The Act establishes the Transition Team, co-chaired by the incumbent President and the President-elect, to facilitate a seamless transition ².
The Team's functions include making arrangements for the transfer of power, ensuring the prompt payment of salaries and benefits, and preparing handing-over notes. These notes provide a comprehensive overview of the outgoing administration's activities, projects, and policies, enabling the incoming administration to hit the ground running ³.
Reconstitution of Boards and Corporations
In due course, the affected boards, commissions, councils, and statutory corporations will be reconstituted in accordance with their respective enabling laws. The President has expressed gratitude to the outgoing members for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors.
As Ghana embarks on this new journey, the managements of these bodies have been directed to seek clearance from the Chief of Staff before making any major decisions, ensuring a stable and effective transition.
With this transition, Ghana reaffirms its commitment to democratic principles, peaceful transfer of power, and continuity of governance. As the nation moves forward, we can expect a renewed focus on development, growth, and prosperity for all Ghanaians.
